It is with sadness that we announce the resignation of Nichole Martin, who has been serving as the PSM Internship Coordinator since April 2011. She is leaving this part-time position to accept a full-time position elsewhere. Nichole’s task was to contact potential PSM employers to promote these graduate programs, create new university-industry linkages, and identify internship and employment opportunities for PSM students in the state.

Over 50 people attended a PSM workshop in the LaSells Stewart Center at Oregon State University (OSU) on the 2nd of December. The meeting brought together faculty and industry representatives to discuss a new PSM in Renewable Energy to be offered jointly with Portland State University and the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT).

Advanced Scientific and Technical Writing (PSM 525) will be offered for the first time at Oregon State University during winter and spring terms 2012 as a 4-credit online class. The class will be cross-listed as WR 525 and will be based in the English Department. Instruction will combine scientific and technical writing with science journalism. Students will draw on a data set to draft a scientific journal article, short grant proposal, magazine article, and letter of inquiry.

The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) recently released results from two surveys conducted this year with financial support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

A consortium of Northwest universities and businesses were recently awarded two $40 million 5-year grants to further develop biofuels as part of the region’s renewable energy industry. The biofuels are to be interchangeable and compatible with fuels already used in cars, planes, and diesel engines. ZeaChem, GreenWood Resources, the University of Washington, Oregon State University, Washington State University, Evergreen State College, Walla Walla Community College, and the University of California at Davis are key regional partners.
