Council of Graduate Schools Releases New PSM Surveys and Book
The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) recently released results from two surveys conducted this year with financial support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The report entitled “Enrollment and Degrees in Professional Science Master’s (PSM) Programs: 2010” stated that nearly 4,400 applications were received by institutions for fall 2010 admission and 48% were accepted, with PSM programs in biology/biotechnology constituting 34% of all applications received. Approximately 55% of first-time enrollees were men, and 45% were women; however, total enrollment was more evenly split between men (51%) and women (49%). Surveys summarized in the “Outcomes for PSM Alumni: 2010/11” report found that 82% of PSM graduates had jobs soon after receiving their degrees, which Debra Stewart, CGS President, said “…is a heartening statistic given the current economic environment.” Over 55% of those employed earned $50,000 or more in annual salary. Among those in new jobs, 38% secured that employment because of their PSM internship. Both reports are available online:

The CGS also recently published the “Professional Science Master’s Guide to Establishing Programs.” The book serves as a guide for establishing PSM programs and includes feasibility analyses, information about program development, operation, and sustainability, as well as details about the formal PSM affiliation.
